When it comes to living in Jacksonville Florida, an air conditioning unit or AC unit is not something you want; it is something you need. The heat and humidity here are too excessive and the amount of time that it is this way is to long-lasting. You need to make sure that your unit is working well and up to date. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever, and sooner or later you will have to replace your unit; the question is, when should I replace my air conditioning unit? Here are a few things to consider if you are unsure if it is time for you to get a new unit.
How Old Is It?
Age of a unit plays a factor in its usability and reparability. As your unit gets older, it will lose its ability to operate at full capacity, and as such cannot perform its duties to its fullest extent. At the same time, the longer you have a unit, the more likely the parts needed to repair it will go out of stock, meaning, when the parts break there will not be anything available to do an AC Repair.
Costs Going Up
As a unit gets older, it will require more energy than before to perform the same tasks. This will lead to a heightening in your overall electricity bill. Though you may have to spend some money in getting your unit replaced, you will be paying more as the months go on to keep your unit running at the capacity of your liking.
When it comes to units and moving parts, time is not your friend and will lead to parts breaking and malfunctioning. This issue will never go away, and in fact, will only get worse as time goes on. Now we are not saying that you get a brand-new unit after a part breaks for the first time, but rather if you find yourself continually replacing parts in your AC unit, you may want to consider replacing your unit.

We may still be in the middle of winter, but it’s never too early to think about summer – and we all know that summer in Jacksonville means heat and humidity. Our biggest tool to combat the heat and humidity in our corner of the world is air conditioning, and if yours was on its last legs at the end of our last cooling season, it may be time to consider a replacement. Not sure if you are seeing the signs? Here are some tips from our Air Source America experts:
Constant and/or Costly Repairs
Repairs for any whole-home system can add up quickly, and your air conditioner is no exception. Did you have to make constant repairs to your AC last cooling season just to keep it running, or are you looking at a large, costly repair so that it will work this coming cooling season? If your repair costs are becoming excessive, it may be time to consider replacement.
Today’s air conditioners are much more efficient than those from just 10 years ago. Additionally, the federal law changed in 2006 regarding the minimum SEER rating for all air conditioners, raising the minimum number from 10 to 13. What does this mean for you? It’s estimated that each SEER number can save you up to 10% on your annual cooling costs, so you could be losing out on significant energy savings. If last year’s energy bills from your air conditioner were the highest you’ve seen, it may be time to consider upgrading to a more energy-efficient system.
The average air conditioner lasts about 10-12 years; if you have a heat pump, the average lifespan is around 20 years. As air conditioners age, the system and its components breakdown, inhibiting the air conditioner’s ability to perform as it should. While maintenance can keep your system in good working order for a long time, maintenance can’t make the system last forever. If your AC is more than 12 years old, it may be time to consider replacement.
You have time on your side, so take some of it to decide whether or not it’s time for air conditioning replacement for your Jacksonville home.
